At last, an introduction towards emotions and current databases are given to help understand comprehensively. Next other facial expression recognition techniques are listed and compared to FACS. Then a detail analysis of Facial Action Coding System is given, outlining the development and defining of Facial Action Coding System, and how to apply it. For this, we add to the number of the AU a letter going from A to E (ATrace, EMaximum). At first, previous researches related are briefly introduced with respect. To go further, it is also possible in Paul Ekman’s Facial Action Coding System method to code the intensity of an observed Action Unit (AU).

Being able to recognize human facial expressions would be of great help to a large amount of aspects such as medical care, building safety system, psychology research and human-computer interaction fields.
